EU Matters.ie - Information about Ireland's membership of the EU

Ireland's contribution to the EU

Since joining, Ireland has been an active member of the EU. Along with the other Member States, we have played a full and engaged part in all the discussions and changes which have been agreed over the 36 years of Ireland’s membership.

Our approach has been driven by the need to advance Ireland's interests in the EU as we contribute to the development of the EU as a whole.

This approach has earned Ireland respect and given us good standing in the EU. The resultant good will has been a vital part of our success as a smaller Member State in a changing European Union.

Through their roles as MEPs, Commissioners and other officials, Irish men and women have played an active role within the EU, helping to raise Ireland’s profile and contribute to the development of the EU.
