Pat Cox was the President of the European Parliament from 2002 – 2004. 
 

He graduated from Trinity College in Dublin in 1974 and went on to become an economics lecturer at the Institute of Public Administration in Dublin and the University of Limerick and later a journalist with RTE.

He was first elected to the European Parliament in 1989, leading the Liberal Democrat group there from 1998 to 2002. He was also a TD for the Cork South central constituency between 1992 and 1994.
