Each EU member state looks after its own health system. But we also all work together on major issues which none of us would be able to deal with on our own. When it comes to health, as in many other areas, together is better.
There is cooperative action at Community level on issues like major health threats with a cross-border or international impact, such as pandemics, like the current swine flu outbreak, and bioterrorism. Cooperation is essential here, and working together, it means we can be more effective in our response to potentially life-threatening illnesses.
EU member countries are also working to try and come up with a list of immunisations for that can be moved easily from one country to another within the EU.
